GUARDIAN'S LEGACY - FALL 2019

Retro-styled Roleplaying Game (Innovation Project)

Guardian's Legacy is a single player roleplaying game (RPG) inspired by Japanese RPGs of the 1990s such as Final Fantasy. I was involved with this project as a part of my MS501 Game Production and Documentation class. My role on the team was that of a production consultant, focusing on documentation for the team as well as advising on SCRUM implementation. I met with this team in person at least once a week through the duration of the production period, and did telecollaboration during other days.

The project's major innovation is a mechanic that allows skills to be custom to the player. By allowing them to build them from modules that combined to create more powerful combinations, unique builds can come to fruition and be fully within the player's control. The artists created visual aids for the skill system and game as a whole, and gave movements to game characters through motion capture.

My large focuses were on the rewrite of their GDD and assisting with their worldbuilding for the game. The team's original GDD was a 54-page document that most team members did not use or reference, and project leadership voiced that they had been unable to update it- the document had simply grown out of control. I pared their document down to 15 pages and created additional documentation for removed elements, making it easier for the team to keep on track and focused.

By the semester's end, the team had managed to complete the necessary innovative elements of their project in order to pitch it to a panel of judges for approval. The Guardian's Legacy team did not publish a final, playable build of their game, but did offer a number of clips and soundtracks. I cut those together into an overview of the project and my role in it.
