WARCRAFT CONQUEST: IN DEATH'S SHADOW

Community Writing Campaign

"The eternal veil screams, torn asunder above the frozen wastes of Icecrown. Even as the shattered sky presents terrifying new threats, an old enemy has been released from the shackles that once bound them. Guided by a sinister hand from beyond, undead swarm across Azeroth to take advantage of a world weakened by strife.

The Alliance and Horde must now muster their war-wearied armies and sail north with all haste to aid the Argent Crusade in confronting the renewed Scourge onslaught. They must find some way to achieve victory, or forever be condemned to torment...

In Death's Shadow."

In Death's Shadow was a community writing campaign on World of Warcraft's Moon Guard server where participants roleplay out a military campaign to battle hordes of undead monsters and malevolent foes. We took advantage of the rich story and lore of the Northrend region when writing our events, and this campaign was in planning for 3 months up until release. The campaign ran from September 20th - September 30th, 2020.

This community event was a huge success, and was one of the largest projects I've been blessed to be a part of. Our engagement levels were much higher than our previous campaign, and the server really came out in force to engage with the storyline we had laid out. It's rare that I've seen people so engaged and excited for a World of Warcraft event series.

My Role

I acted as a primary coordinator for this campaign, focusing on the planning of overall story events, organizing participant rewards, and project management. Additionally, I served as a quest/event writer on 8/10 campaign days, and performed graphics work for the series.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

600+ PARTICIPANTS!

This campaign shattered all expectations for the team. We had over 600 people participate in the project from three different World of Warcraft servers. Additionally, our campaign Discord server broke 1000 members during this campaign, allowing many to be involved with the storyline even if unsubscribed from World of Warcraft.

90 INDIVIDUAL EVENTS!

During the course of our 10-day campaign, our team planned and executed 90 quest missions for players to choose from as they waged war across the frozen wastes. These differed dramatically in style and tone, but worked together to tell the tale of a desperate struggle against a ceaseless horde of foes.

230+ UNIQUE REWARDS

During the course of planning for this campaign, the coordinators created and balanced 220 individual pieces of loot to reward participants, many of which had individual stories and unique effects. Additional rewards for participants included narrative incentives such as titles or epithets for especially heroic individuals.

Project Reviews & Testimonials

"I got a rune axe, and while I didn't necessarily expect it, it was a nice gesture. Made me feel like I got something out of attendance. I also enjoyed how the weapons were giving personality. It's an opportunity for character storylines which I see some people taking even after the campaign's end."

The finale, Siege of Icecrown, was so perfectly coordinated by the DMs and behind-the-scenes crewmembers that I cannot recall attending a more breathtaking event in my life within Roleplay. In the last 14 years, those that took to the stage for that finale are the DMs that will keep with me and inspire me to be better as a campaign coordinator for my own guild and friends."

"As much as I love playing in my guild (and I do; quite a lot in fact), it's good to be reminded my guild is not the whole world. There's an entire realm full of people out there with their own stories, and the fact that I'm connected in some small part to a few of them is mind-blowing to me. I love that sensation."
